Klein (Mary) Collection (1992.001)
1 box This collection contains examples and results of her
research on the subject of African Americans on the Eastern Shore as
well as the Snow Hill Community and the Dirickson Farm in the area of
Berlin both located in Worcester County, Maryland. The first series
covers the subject of African Americans including the history of San
Domingo, a community of free African Americans dating back to the early
part of the 18th century on the Eastern Shore and a manuscript on the
activities of the Church of England regarding slaves and their position
in the church. The second series examines life in Snow Hill, Maryland
through the investigation of a day book dating back to 1838. Dirickson
Farm or Sandy Point Farm in Berlin, Maryland is the focus of the third
and final series. The farm and its two story brick house was one of the
largest structures on the Eastern Shore prior to the Revolutionary War.
The farm functioned as a plantation, once comprising as many as 1800

Korff (Harry) Collection (2007.044)
This collection contains information and
materials pertaining to the Army Air Force Aviation Career of Harry Otto
Korff. This includes his Aviation Cadet Examination Board recommendation
letters and his letters designating active duty. Also included are his
yearbooks from the Air Force aviation schools he attended and also
memorabilia from his time in Italy with the 15th Air Force. One of the
more interesting items is a scrapbook with labeled photographs
describing his time spent in the military. Different parts of his Air
Force uniform are included with all the pins to designate his rank. One
artifact that Harry Korff himself collected was a piece of a
Messerschmitt 109 German Plane that was shot down near Foggia, Italy in
January 1944. Hanry Otto Korff was born November 1, 1923. He died April
2, 1993 and is buried at the Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury, MD.
Korff's father was a lieutenant V.G. naval aviator in WWI and they lived
in Baltimore. He graduated from Forest Park High School in 1941,
participating on the school's lacrosse team. Korff then worked at C & P
Telephone Company of Baltimore before attending University of Maryland
College Park for one year. He enlisted in the Army on December 8, 1943
and was then accepted as an aviation cadet in Baltimore on February 10,
1943 due to a recommendation letter written by Baltimore Mayor, Howard
W. Jackson. He was called to active duty as an aviation cadet April 11,
1943 to Squadron D Group 4 in the Army Air Force Classification Center,
Nashville, Tennessee. From there Korff attended Gunnery School,
Pre-Flight Class and Bombardier School at various air fields in the
United States. He was stationed with the 15th Air Force in Italy
completing 57 missions/34 sorties from August 20, 1944 through April 8,
1945 with 254 total operational hours. Korff had mission targets in
Poland, Austria, Czech., Hungary, Germany and Greece. As well as being a
First Lieutenant, Korff received the Air Medal for sustained Operational
Flight over enemy territory, and the Distinguished Flying Cross medal.
After the war, Harry Korff attended Johns Hopkins in Baltimore to become
a dentist. He married twice, had one son (deceased) and finally settled
on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. |

Kotlowski Civil Rights Collection

news clippings, transcripts, correspondence and audio tape cassettes.
Material in the collection tell the story of Aloysius Sheppard an 18
year Black American accused and convicted of rape who was subsequently
lynched in 1915 in Caroline County, Maryland. The collection also covers
the political climate regarding the subject of Civil Rights in 1963
through presidential recordings and partial transcripts obtained from
the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. |
