Historical
Note
Smith Island has one of the oldest contiguous fishing
communities in the Eastern Shore. Despite the decline in the
fishing industry and environmental regulation, many Smith
Island natives continue the trade. Having rarely migrated
outward from the Island until the 20th century, many natives
still retain a colonial Maryland accent.
