Historical
Note
Elder Ezekiel Evans was born in the Baltimore Hundred of
Sussex County, DE in 1829. He emigrated to Illinois in 1854
with his family, and returned after the American Civil War
and founded the Mt. Zion Christian Church before returning
again to Illinois in 1872. Elder Cyrus Holt was the first
Delaware preacher to minister in the new church, and
henceforth was the first minister of the Mt. Zion Church
until his death in 1952. Painter Dallas West was initially
of a secular background, but after his wife's death began to
read the New Testament and began to preach to local
households. West was also involved with the building of
multiple churches in the Delaware area and upon his death in
1937 was considered by many to be the father of the church
on the Eastern Shore.
